 게오르그 프리드리히 헨델(Georg Friedrich Handel)

 

 Handel은, 독일 태생으로 이탈리아에서 활동하다가 영국으로 귀화하여 영국인으로

생을 마감한 국제적 명성의 작곡가이자 바로크 시대의 작곡가이기도 하다.

 헨델이, 54세 때 1741년 8월 22일 작곡을 시작하고 단지 24일만에 완성됐었다.
이 때 그의 삶은, 좌절의 한가운데에 있었다.
그 동안 그는,오페라에 주력해 극장까지 운영을 했었지만 계속 실패만을 거듭했었다.
게다가 4년전 그는, 뇌출혈로 반신불수까지 됐었다.

하지만 신앙심이깊었던 그는 하나님께 영감을 받아, 단기간에 그 대곡을 완성할 수 있었다.
그리고 그의 삶도 · 음악도 회복됐었다.
그 전의 어떤 곡보다도 더 많은 연주, 그의 생전에만 50여 차례 연주됐었다.

그리고 당시 국왕인 조지 2세는, 연주 중 너무도 감격해 자신도

모르게 일어서게 됐었고, 청중까지 모두 일어서고 … .
해서 현대에서도, 청중이 일어서는 게 관례가 돼버렸다.

 

  

 

이 대곡은 이사야서 · 시편 · 복음서를 바탕으로

그리스도의 탄생 · 삶 · 수난의 내용을 담고 있으며, 총 3부로 구성돼 있다.
제 1부 - 예언과 탄생 · 대강절과 성탄절에 대한 이야기
제 2부 - 예수의 수난과 속죄 · 그리스도의 고난과 · 부활 · 승천 그리고 그리스도의 복음
제 3부 - 부활과 영원한 생명. 요한 계시록에 있는 내용
이 중에서, 할렐루야는 제 2부의 끝곡인 합창곡으로 등장한다.

  

 

 

‘ 오라트리오 ’ 란, 종교음악 또는 종교와 관련된 내용을 다룬 독창 · 합창 · 관현악을 위한 대규모 악곡 · 대본은 보통 성서를 기초로 하며, 장면에서 장면으로의

 전개에 필요한 해설을 다양한 성부들에 의한 레치타티보가 담당하는데,  

오페라에서 연기가 없다는 것만 제외하곤 거의 비슷하다.
그리고 3대 오라트리오가 있는데, 헨델의 메시아 · 하이든의 천지창조 멘델스존의 엘리야가 있다.
메시아는, 이 중 가장 유명하고도 멋진 곡이다. 

이 곡의 악기 편성은, 오케스트라의 관현악으로 거의 연주된다고 한다.
